Folkestone Invicta manager Jay Saunders still has targets he wants side to hit this season as Isthmian Premier champions travel to Whitehawk

Promotion is already secured - but Folkestone boss Jay Saunders still has targets he wants his side to hit this season.

Invicta were presented with the Isthmian Premier trophy after two-goal Jake Hutchinson and Nathan Paul-Lavaly led them to a 3-2 home derby victory against Ramsgate on Easter Monday, having clinched the title through goals from Hutchinson and captain Kevin Lokko in a comeback 2-1 success at St Albans two days earlier.

It means Saunders can start to prepare for Invicta’s first-ever season at National League South early.

But the manager still has his sights set on his team reaching the 100-point mark - something they can do if they win their final three fixtures of this season - reaching 100 league goals, they’re on 94, and ensuring striker Hutchinson finishes the campaign as the division’s top scorer.

He has 21 league goals, two clear of Brentwood’s Daniel Ogunleye, as it stands.

“It’s been unbelievable,” said Saunders. “When we first came in last season, there were a few hundred and, to see 2,500 here on Monday, I’m pleased we got the win for them.

“I want 100 points, I want 100 goals, so we have edged closer to that. I’d love Jake to finish as top goalscorer so there’s still little targets like that.

“As I’ve said to the boys, we’re not going to come off it. We’re still going to train and we’re still going to do everything properly - and the boys know that.

“Getting the trophy in front of your home fans, we really enjoyed it.

"With the last few promotions I have had, I haven’t really enjoyed it.

“I have enjoyed it - don’t get me wrong - but I have missed out on the changing room celebrations and everything because you’re doing interviews.

"For me, I wanted to make sure I soaked up every minute this time.”

Hutchinson, 23, is one of several talented young players that have been blended in with the experience of the likes of striker Joe Pigott, midfielders Alex Woodyard and Dean Rance, alongside 30-year-old Lokko.

Saunders revealed St Albans manager Gary McCann praised their backroom team’s recruitment throughout the season.

Just Rance, fellow midfielder Jack Jebb, young defender Joel Odeniran and forward Ade Yusuff remain from last term.

He added: “He said ‘I have to give you credit for your recruitment’. No disrespect to those in charge last year, they went with a lot of experience.

“The best thing that happened was the last four games of last season (when Saunders took charge early). I was never meant to come in, things happened, and I ended up coming in.

“I got an insight into what needed changing. I made the decision to rip it up.

“We work really hard on the recruitment side and that’s where I have got to give myself and the management team credit because, if you get that wrong, you’re in for a long season. We got it right.

“Along the way, we added bits of quality that made us better, as well. We didn’t go the route of a load of superstars.

“Look at Adam Lovatt. He got relegated from the league last year - and we have been giving him stick - because it looks like a double relegation since [former club] Hashtag are going, as well!

“He has gone from that to winning the league. Ike Orji got released by Billericay and he’s another we have picked up.

“It’s been a lot of work behind the scenes and it’s paid off.”

Saunders also confirmed chairman Josh Healey will be taking the squad to Ibiza next month, not that he’ll accept it as an excuse for a poor season run-in, either.

“We’re going away,” Saunders said. “The chairman is taking us away in May.

“What I don’t want is for us to start losing games and the points total gets closer, and it looks like we have scraped over the line. We have been in the lead or close to it most of the season.

“I want to finish the season clear and the boys want that, as well, so we’ll keep going.”

Folkestone are at Whitehawk in the league this weekend.

Invicta won the reverse fixture 4-1 when the sides met in September through two-goal Yusuff, Ebbsfleet loanee Maxx Manktelow and Donell Thomas.
